Introducing Eric Margan And The Red Lions: Debut Release Midnight Book

New York-based indie-chamber rock musicians, Eric Margan & the Red Lions, present their debut release Midnight Book (March 17, 2009/Self-Released). Drawing from years of classical training and a personal devotion to modern jazz and classic rock, the talented songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/front man, Eric Margan, makes an original and sophisticated entrance with an impressive collection of 12 incredible tracks in Midnight Book.

The debut album for 22-year-old Margan resonates as a somber, theatrical novel – complete with love, tragedy, heartbreak, and revival. Midnight Book, as the title might imply, is best experienced from “cover to cover.” Midnight Book delivers stellar and distinctive compositions, augmented by ensnaring and intriguing lyrical poetry, leading the listener into an introspective musical journey.

The album opens with “An Ocean Blue”, a swirling, seductive tapestry of orchestral grandeur, seemingly emerging from the darkest depths of the piano and sets the stage for a colossal, metaphor-laden song cycle. As the pages of Midnight Book turn, the love story that began so triumphantly begins to unravel in Margan’s “A Speckled Mind.” It is here that Margan displays the delicate touch of an impressionist painter, through the juxtaposition of orchestral strings combined with a powerful yet poignant drum and bass polyrhythm.

The album’s standout “Old Man River” is the turning point in the story, full of grandiose and massively cinematic crescendo. Margan’s colorful plot thickens to a soaring climax, telling a story of an estranged marriage – complete with twists, turns, murder and revenge.

Margan appropriately concludes his heavy narrative with the relatively bare instrumentation of strings, piano, voice and guitar. The last notes are imminent, chords that are prepared to leave their final impression – but not without a last fighting chance.

Born and raised in Columbia County of Upstate New York, Eric Margan’s musical endeavors started at just nine years old when he began studying flute. It was when he turned 14 that the hobby had become a potential career. He began treading new waters with the formation of his first band – a three-piece rock group in which he was a co-songwriter, bassist, and singer. Margan furthered his bass skills by participating in various jazz ensembles and combos throughout his high school years. Furthering his music studies, he brought together his classical training with his passion for modern rock and live performance with the addition of the talented musicians that make up the Red Lions.

A stellar line-up of musicians was assembled to augment Margan’s music on stage, including drummer Jim Bertini, bassists Scott Kellerhouse and Vince Chiarito, keyboardist Zachary Seman and guitarist/flutist/vocalist Johanna Warren. Live performances and Midnight Book also feature various string, woodwind and brass players.

Planning an A+ Wedding Reception

Every bride-to-be has dreamed about getting married practically since they were little girls. Some brides remember drawing themselves with veils in crayon in preschool. Others remember practicing a new surname on the back of a high school notebook. No matter how you cut the wedding cake, every bride-to-be wants their wedding to be considered happy, special, and sometimes “the best there ever will be.” However, the reality is …dreams do not always translate into reality.

 As Upstate New York wedding DJ, Kenny Casanova, I have acted not only as a music provider or song selector, I have often been utilized as a wedding planner, or tip giver. It is very rewarding to walk into the reception hall and see that many of my ideas have been put to good use. Even though I am from Albany, NY, I have found that no matter where the wedding is, the bride and groom are always looking for clues.

 Now, whenever I sit down with the bride and groom, I offer whatever I can to help the reception be a success, beyond just song selections. I try to identify what the bride can do to help her happy visions actually come to life.

Also having experience in school teaching, I realized that a wedding reception is like a research paper. To make for a great one, research has to be done. But before you do any research, you need to focus on asking the right questions, before you can try to find answers. First off, the bride and groom should identify “The Big Question” and then decide on a thesis (an answer) they are both comfortable with.

 The only real way to be happy with your reception is if all the people around you are happy. The big question, therefore, then should not be “What do I want?” but rather, “What do I want for my guests?”

 By formulating this question every time you plan an aspect of your party, you are planning from the guests’ perspective. Planning using the “Big Question” instead of something more selfish and meaningful to only you, will spawn a number of sub-questions that go along with it like, “what do I want my guests to say when they sit down?” and also, “what do I want my guests to say when they walk out the door?”

Demographics is everything. Thinking about who is going to be there before you actually plan, will make your reception “the best wedding of all time.” The music that the DJ is asked to play is only one example. Different people like different things and you have to have a happy medium of what they will like and what you will like too.

Realizing that you are trying to accommodate all of your guests’ wishes from a great wedding reception is only the first step. Next, you have to do your research. Your homework is to find what really makes you happy, and also makes every guest attending happy as well. Because wedding receptions happen everywhere every day, it is safe to say thousands of reception options have been created and your answers are out there. You just have to find them.

Using this planning philosophy can work in every area including food, entertainment, music and even the overall look & layout of the decor.

Let’s apply this unselfish planning thinking from the guests’ perspective to one particular aspect of the reception: The Cake. While you may absolutely love the idea of a classy cream cheese carrot cake, Uncle Charlie may absolutely HATE IT. That doesn’t mean you have to be unselfish and not have carrot cake, it only means you have to think outside of the box. What would my guests like to see in a cake? How can I make everyone happy? In this case, why not try WEDDING CUPCAKES. Have you heard of this? You tier up a wedding cake display with many different types of cup cakes, in displayed in the shape of a traditional wedding cake. Everyone, including you and Uncle Charlie is now happy.

 As a Wedding DJ, I tell my clients that if you really want to have your guests look back at attending “the best wedding ever,” keep them in mind as much as yourself. Happiness breeds happiness. Playing your favorite songs is important and fine, but remember to always involve some of your guests’ favorite songs as well-even when they might not involve the same types of musical tastes. Find the happy medium, it is out there.

Development

Before becoming a shopping mall, the property was the Stanford Golf Course.

The mall cost million to build. It was constructed by Stanford Associates and designed by Evantash-Friedman Associates of Philadelphia. The parking lot had space for 4,000 vehicles. Local leasing was handled by Frank J. Nigro Realty of Albany, NY.

According to Lewis M. Stone of Pan American Development Corp., it was the first mall in the nation to have the “mini-mall” concept, setting aside 9,000 square feet for approximately fifteen to twenty boutiques representing major metropolitan areas. It would also cater to small businesses. This section was included in the southwest portion of the mall.

Opening Day

The mall opened its doors on October 5, 1970. It opened with three anchor department stores and seventy additional stores. The temperature was set at 72 degrees. On opening day, there were authentic Native American dances and ceremonies and 10,000 free toys and balloons. An invocation was scheduled to be given by the Rev. Darwin Kirbv of St. George’s Episcopal Church.

Notes:

In the first half of 1976, Golub Corp. acquired the lease for the former Pantry Pride store which closed in May, 1976. Golub Corp. opened a Price Chopper grocery store in the mall. The Golub Corp. closed its Price Chopper store in the mall in January, 1987, due to the “supercenter” being built in the neighboring town of Colonie.

In September, 1990, Addis and Dey’s purchased the Mohawk Mall Boston Store. Addis & Dey’s held a going out of business sale at this location and the Wilton Mall at Saratoga in December, 1992.

Marshall’s became a tenant of Mohawk Mall around 1992, leaving Marshall’s Plaza, the strip mall next door which bore its name.

Ownership

In 1972, the (Troy) Times Record referred to Stanford Associates as the owner of the “middle of the mall”. In 1976, the mall was purchased by Balcor Realty Investors, Ltd. In 1983, Wilmorite purchased the center section of the mall, owning 23.9 acres.. In 1998, The Albany Business Journal listed Wilmorite as the owner of the center of the mall in a division called Mohawk Mall Associates, while indicating the space formerly housing Montgomery Wards was owned by a Chicago real estate company and the space housing the former Bradlees store was owned by American Real Estate Holdings Ltd. Partners.

Decline

In 1985, a strip mall called Marshall’s Plaza, was built next to Mohawk Mall. (The signature tenant, Marshall’s, would eventually leave the plaza and move into Mohawk Mall.)

The opening of the Rotterdam Square mall in the late 1980s by Wilmorite, Mohawk Mall’s primary owners, had an impact on the mall. This was predicted in a federal government study about the retail impact on the area. By October, 1991, 25% of the mall was vacant. Many of the missing tenants moved to Rotterdam Square Mall. Rumors circulated in early 1992 that Addis & Dey’s would relocate to Latham Circle Mall to the increasing vacancies at Mohawk Mall. By early 1993, after the closings of Addis & Dey’s and Anderson Little, Niskayuna Town Supervisor Edwin Reilly asked mall managers to look for upscale stores and add items such as a food court and more fountains. He complained about the frequent store closings in the mall.

The Niskayuna Square shopping center, only minutes away from Mohawk Mall, was built in the mid 1990s. The strip center contained a Super Shop N’ Save supermarket and other stores. This too, put retail pressure on Mohawk Mall.

In May, 1996, then anchor Bradlees announced its store would be closing. Bradlees’ closing was completed in November, 1996. Montgomery Wards closed its store at the end of 1997. By early 1998, after Wards’ closing, the mall was only 50% occupied. The movie theatres, operated at that point by Loew’s Theatres and having seven screens, closed in July, 1999.

Competition from newer, larger area malls such as Crossgates Mall also helped to seal the mall’s fate.

Tax Challenges

In 1972, Stanford Associates (owners of the center portion of the mall), sued the Town of Niskayuna to lower the assessment of their portion of the mall. Stanford Associates asked that their portion be returned to the old assessment of 0,000. The South Colonie School Board decided to order a complete appraisal of the property at a school board meeting on October 3, 1972.

In 1990, there were more assessment challenges.

Later in the 1990s, then owner Wilmorite had a four-year legal dispute with the Town of Niskayuna over the mall’s assessment. In February 1999, a court ruled in favor of Wilmorite, requiring the town to pay back 4,205. The South Colonie School District was required to refund 1,237.

America’s Funniest People

On February 10, 1991, crew from ABC’s America’s Funniest People were at the center court (between Addis & Dey’s and the empty former Flah’s store) from 11am to 4pm to search for potential contestants.

Redevelopment

Mall management considered a mixed use facility such as office space for government and doctors offices in 1998. Area residents, even elementary school children, came up with ideas for repopulating the mall..

The property was purchased from Wilmorite in June, 2000, by Myron M. Hunt and Benderson Development Co. from Buffalo, NY. At the time, the remaining tenants were Marshall’s, Media Play, and Rex’s TV and Appliances.

Six months after its public launch, VeoMed.com has emerged as a leading social media site for the medical community.  VeoMed.com blends the best features of YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter into an integrated platform designed to facilitate better communication, collaboration, and information sharing around pertinent issues in medicine.  More than 80 organizations have already created online communities on VeoMed.com, and tens of thousands of doctors, scientists, nurses, and other medical professionals have used the platform to engage in interactive learning, conversation, and networking.   VeoMed.com is home to well-respected organizations such as the John Wayne Cancer Institute, the Columbia University Trauma and PTSD Program, the Albany Medical College Department of Emergency Medicine, and the University of Virginia Department of Pathology.

All of VeoMed.com’s features are free to use for healthcare professionals, hospitals, universities, and anybody with the goal of advancing or learning about medicine.  VeoMed.com users can upload and share rich-media content, dialogue, and receive a stream of updates from organizations and other users.  Users are able to interact and share content publicly by creating an Open Access portal, or privately by creating a Private Access portal that is invitation only.

Thomas Chandy, VeoMed.com’s co-founder, was inspired to create a place for the medical community to share information while developing medical software for Harvard Medical School.  “After working on a project dealing with visual material related to heart scans, I realized that the medical community needed a centralized place to share and store information,” explains Chandy.  Two years after setting out to create that centralized place, Chandy and co-founder Aaron Krinsky are confident that VeoMed.com will advance the study of medicine and ultimately improve patient care.
